From the Heart: Larry Ferlazzo
Larry Ferlazzo teaches English language learners at Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, CA. He also writes regularly about ideas for the ELL classroom in his blog, Larry Ferlazzo's Websites of the Day. In this interview with Colorín Colorado, Larry discusses how he uses technology in his classroom, finds new resources for his blog, and helps to create a "community of learners" at his school.
Expanded Learning Time for ELLs
In 2008, the Center for American Progress published a report that supports expanded learning time as a way of improving learning outcomes for English language learners. A Race Against the Clock: The Value of Expanded Learning Time for English Language Learners, by Melissa Lazarín, recommends that learning time be increased by at least 30% to allow ELLs an opportunity to catch up to their native English speaking peers, both in content knowledge and in academic vocabulary. The summary of the report is also available in Spanish. This report may be helpful when discussing summer learning and ELLs.
