The Latino Education Crisis: Rescuing the American Dream

Achievement gaps between Latinos and most other students are enormous and getting worse, in spite of progress for other minority groups. Such effects will be devastating given rising job market demands and increasing representation of Latinos in the workforce. Public policy and academic achievement relates to six key areas that need to be addressed: early and continuing cognitive enrichment, housing policies that promote integration and residential stability, integrated social services at school sites, recruiting and preparing extraordinary teachers, exploiting Latino linguistic advantage, and college preparation and support programs.
