Floridalma Argueta
Floridalma Argueta is the mother of two daughters who have attended Wolfe Street Academy in Baltimore, MD. In this interview, featured as part of our Community Schools and ELLs video project, she shares the story of her younger daughter, whose hearing loss was diagnosed by a team at Wolfe Street that then advocated for access to special services, equipment, and eventually a cochlear implant. She also talks about the ways the schools makes Spanish-speaking families feel welcome.

Daughters attending Wolfe Street
Tengo dos hijas. Una de 13 años y una de 9 años y medio. Las dos han estado en Wolfe Street. Mi hija de 13 años, vino de Honduras hace 5 años y vino a Wolfe Street a cuarto grado y estuvo aquí cuarto y quinto grado y ahora mismo está en Crossroad School. Y mi otra hija ha estado aquí desde pre-k, y ahora mismo está en cuarto grado.
Translation: I have two daughters. One is 13 years old and one is nine years old. Both have gone to Wolfe Street. My 13-year-old came from Honduras five years ago in 4th grade and she was here for 4th and 5th grade and now she is in The Crossroads (Middle) School. And my other daughter has been here since PreK, and now she is in 4th grade.
Help with a hearing problem
Mi hija nació con un problema de audición que es genético. Ella nació con ese problema. Pero no lo identificamos hasta que llegó a Kindergarden, su maestro Mister […] hizo un test en el habla y él identificó que la niña tenía problemas de audición. Hasta ese momento yo creía que los problemas de atención de mi hija eran eso, problemas de atención. Pero él identificó que la niña tenía problemas auditivos.
Y empezamos a hacer pruebas, la llevamos al médico, y determinaron que efectivamente la niña tenía problemas de audición. Desde kindergarden ha llevado un proceso hasta finales de primer grado le pusieron aparatos auditivos –hearing aids - porque los médicos determinaron que más del 50% de los oídos de mi hija no estaban funcionando.
Y los maestros han estado con ella en todo este proceso al grado que tienen que usar un aparato de FM adicional para dar su clase, para que mi hija pueda escucharlos. Y ha sido un proceso difícil, largo y también de que ha sido un proceso para los maestros porque no habían tenido en la escuela un niño con este problema. Hasta hoy en día mi hija ya perdió el 100% su oído derecho porque la pérdida es progresiva. Y su oído izquierdo solo está funcionando en un 35%.
Entonces, en esta semana mi hija va a tener una cirugía para tener un implante coclear. Y es un nuevo proceso para la escuela porque es el primer niño en la escuela que va a tener un implante coclear. Y los maestros van a tener que usar un nuevo sistema FM, y van a tener que adaptarse a otro sistema de aprendizaje con mi hija. Mi hija ha tenido programas especiales como EIP y ahora mismo solo tiene un 504 pero ha tenido terapeutas de lenguaje y de habla y de lectura. Y estoy bien agradecida con la escuela por todo lo que han hecho con ella.
Translation: My daughter was born with a genetic hearing problem. But we didn’t identify it until she went to kindergarten. Her teacher did a speech test and he identified a hearing problem. Until that moment I thought that it was just attention problems. But he identified that she had problems with her hearing.
So we started tests, we took her to doctors, and determined definitely that she had a hearing problem. From kindergarten, a process started that lasted until the end of first grade in which they gave her hearing aids because they determined that more than 50% of her hearing wasn’t working.
And the teachers have been by her side throughout this whole process. She had to use an FM apparatus so that she could hear class. And it has been a long and difficult process, and also it was a long process for the teachers because they hadn’t had a child with this problem before. As of today she has lost 100% of her right ear because the loss is progressive.
So, this week, my daughter is going to have surgery to have a cochlear implant. And it’s a new process for the school because she is the first child at the school to have a cochlear implant. And the teachers are going to have to use a new FM system, and they are going to have to adapt to a new system of learning with my daughter.
My daughter has had special programs like IEP and now she only has as 504 but she has language therapy. And speech and reading. And I am so grateful to the school for what they have done for her.
Spanish support at the school
Creo que como hispanos ha sido bien importante para nosotros que la escuela tenga una persona que habla español y nos pueda ayudar desde el principio que venimos a la escuela. Siempre la escuela ha tenido en la oficina una persona que habla español y que nos ha atendido en español. Y eso es bien importante para los padres. Y otra cosa que podemos venir en cualquier momento y preguntar y pedir ayuda, y siempre hay una persona disponible para hacerlo.
Podemos ir a la oficina y pedir hablar con Mr. Gaither y él siempre está dispuesto para hablar con los padres. Y también él hace un esfuerzo por hablar en español con nosotros.
Translation: I think that as Hispanics it has been very important for us that the school has someone who speaks Spanish and that can help us from the beginning since we came to the school. The school always has someone in the office who speaks Spanish and helps us in Spanish. And this is really important for parents. And another thing is that we can come at any time and ask for help, and always there is someone available to do it.
We can go to the office and ask to speak to Mr. Gaither (the principal) and he is always available to speak to parents. He makes an effort to speak Spanish with us.
The school has adapted to its families
La escuela hace actividad de que ayuda a mantener la cultura. En años anteriores, la escuela ha hecho programas de arte con los padres de familia, ha hecho programas y han dado clases de inglés que interactúan con los padres, y que hablamos únicamente español. Y también ellos han hecho fiestas que solamente los hispanos celebramos. América no lo celebra. Pero la escuela se ha adaptado a la población que tiene.
Translation: The school does activities that help maintain our culture. In past years, the school has done art programs with parents, they have given English classes where parents can interact, those that only speak Spanish. And also they do holidays that only Hispanics celebrate that aren’t usually celebrated here in the U.S. But the school has adapted to the population it has.
What’s missing at other schools
Sí he podido tener la experiencia de platicar con otros padres y preguntarles cómo ellos se sienten en sus escuelas. Y lamentablemente, no todos tienen la misma experiencia que yo porque sus hijos tal vez están en la escuela donde no tienen el apoyo de su mismo idioma o donde simplemente no han sentido que puedan comunicarse plenamente con la escuela.
Translation: I have been able to speak with other parents and ask how they feel about their schools. And unfortunately, they don’t have the same experience that I do (at Wolfe) because their kids maybe are in a school where there isn’t help in the same language or where simply they have not felt that they could communicate well with the school.
Getting to know other parents
Uno puede comunicarse con los padres. Y aprender a quererse entre los padres. A pesar que la escuela tiene una mayor población mexicana, yo soy hondureña, pero he podido unirme a ellos, incluso he aprendido de ellos. Porque hay fiestas y costumbres que ellos tienen como mexicanos que yo no las conocía. Pero también he aprendido a conocerlas y a placticarlas también, porque me he unido a ellos. Y sí siento que la escuela es una familia. Sí nos sentimos así aquí.
Translation: You can communicate with other parents. And learn to get to become friends as parents. It may be that the school has a large Mexican population, I am from Honduras, but I have been able to get together with them and I have learned from them. Because there are festivals and customs that they have as Mexicans that I didn’t know about. But I have also learned how to get to know them because I have gotten closer to them. And I feel that the school is like a family. Yes, we feel like that here.
Leaving Wolfe Street
Teresa que es la que todavía está aquí, dice que no quiere llegar a quinto grado porque no quiere irse de Wolfe Street. Ha estado acá desde pre-k y creo que ha aprendido a amar la escuela durante todos estos años.
Cuando mi hija vino de Honduras fue difícil porque no conocía a nadie. Pero los maestros la amaron bien rápido. Mi hija es bien hiperactiva y estaba involucrada en muchas actividades en la escuela. Y para ella fue también difícil salir de acá para la Middle School.
Translation: Teresa is my daughter that is still here, and she says she doesn’t want to get to 5th grade because she doesn’t want to leave Wolfe Street. She has been here since PreK and I think she has learned to love this school during all of these years.
When my child came from Honduras it was very difficult because she didn’t know anyone. But the teachers loved her right away. My daughter is very hyperactive and she was involved in lots of school activities. And for her it was also difficult to leave here to go to Middle School.
Guidance that made a big difference
Algo que para mí fue una experiencia importante en la escuela… la escuela me ayudó en el proceso cuando mi hija salió de quinto grado para ir a una Middle School. Generalmente cuando los niños salen de quinto grado uno no sabe qué hacer, dónde mandarlos. Y normalmente van a la escuela pública que les toca ahí porque no conocemos cómo hacer el proceso. Pero en mi caso, la Sra. Connie me ayudó para que mi hija fuera a una escuela que no es la que la zona le toca por las habilidades que mi hija tenía.
Y encontró una muy buena escuela. Porque la escuela en que mi hija está es muy buena ahora. Y creo que la ayuda, y la asesoría que ellas me dieron para mandar a mi hija a esa escuela la ha ayudado a mi hija a triunfar y eso es importante para mí. Ahora mismo mi hija se va a graduar de octavo grado y va para una ‘boarding school’ para Pennsylvania. Y para mí ha sido un logro bien importante que nació desde aquí.
Translation: Something that was an important experience for me in the school – the school helped in the process when my daughter left 5th grade for middle school. Usually when a child leaves 5th grade, you don’t know what to do, where to send them. And normally they go to the public school right there that they have to go to because we don’t know how to do the process. But in my case, Miss Connie helped me so that my daughter went to a school that was not in my neighborhood because of my daughter’s talents.
And she found a really good school. Because the school where my daughter is really good. And I think that helped her, and the counselor that gave me to send my daughter to this school has helped my daughter succeed and that is really important for me. Now my daughter is going to graduate from eighth grade and go to a boarding school in Pennsylvania. And for me that has been an important accomplishment that started here (at Wolfe).
