As a young boy, Say was sent off to Tokyo to attend a prestigious school. Instead of studying, he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a cartoonist.
Say begins his storytelling with sketches. When he's ready to create the book, he starts with page one and gives himself two weeks to finish each spread.
"The Innkeeper's Apprentice" (1979), Say's first and only long-form book, tells his own life story. The book inspired Say's 2011 picture book autobiography, "Drawing from Memory."
In 1993, Say illustrated The Boy of the Three-Year Nap. When the story won the Horn Book Award, it jumpstarted his career as a children's book illustrator.
